The Greek Government has opened a new tender for the issuance of licenses for private television channels, one year after the Supreme Administrative Court declared unconstitutional the previous auction.

Athens, Nov 28 (EFE) .- The Greek government has opened a new tender for the issuance of licenses for private television, one year after the Supreme Court Administrative declared unconstitutional the previous auction.

The new tender, published last night in the Official State Gazette, contemplates the concession of a maximum of seven licenses for general content channels for a period of ten years.

From the moment of publication, the aspiring chains will have 45 days, that is until January 8, for submit your applications and the necessary documents.

The starting price of each license will be 35 million euros and if there are more than seven interested parties, a auction.

Later, a tender is planned for thematic content chains, such as sports, music or entertainment.

The chains that currently operate with a provisional license and have not obtained a permit will have three months to close, unless they choose to become a thematic channel.

This is the second tender launched by the Government of Alexis Tsipras to regularize the audiovisual market in this country, which has been operating irregularly with provisional licenses for almost three decades.

September 2016 granted four permits after an auction that lasted 70 hours, but the chains filed an appeal with the Supreme Administrative Court arguing that the award of licenses should have It was the prerogative of an independent body such as the National Broadcasting Council (CNRT), and not of the Government.

In addition, they considered the decision to grant only four arbitrary licenses.

The Greek government argued that it had limited the licenses to four because, in the face of the crisis and the consequent fall in advertising revenues, the audiovisual market national could not guarantee the economic survival of more channels.

Likewise, he justified having assumed the organization of the auction due to the blockade by the opposition conservative to the appointment of a new CNRT.

At the end of October 2016 the Supreme Administrative Court declared unconstitutional the reform of the audiovisual law and knocked down everything the auction procedure.

Finally, in November the Government and the main opposition party, New Democracy, reached an agreement that allowed the appointment of the members of the CNRT and open a new procedure for regularization of private channels.
