Sergio Ramírez says that Miguel Ángel Asturias influenced authors of the "boom"

The writers of the "Latin American boom" were influenced by the "novelty" of Guatemalan literature Miguel Ángel Asturias (1899-1974), author of a "capital work" for the letters of the region, said Sergio Ramírez at the International Book Fair (FIL) of Guadalajara.

Guadalajara (Mexico), Nov 27 (EFE) .- The writers of the "Latin American boom" were influenced by the "novelty" of Guatemalan literature Miguel Ángel Asturias (1899-1974), author of a "capital work" for the letters of the region, Sergio Ramírez said at the International Book Fair (FIL) of Guadalajara.

"The authors of the 'boom' must have learned from the novelties that Asturias presented to Latin American literature, "affirmed the Nicaraguan, winner of the 2017 Cervantes Prize, at a dialogue table about the work of Asturias in the framework of of FIL, which takes place in this city in western Mexico until December 3.

Ramírez recalled the rejection and accusation of plagiarism that Asturias made regarding "One hundred years of solitude ", the book of the Colombian Gabriel García Márquez that was published in 1967, the same year in which the Guatemalan won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

This fact" did not help much "so that would establish a relationship of "respect and consideration" by the authors of the "boom" towards the figure of Asturias who, however, was an impeller of magical realism, considered the author of "Margarita, linda la mar" (1998).

He highlighted the contribution that Asturias made to Latin American literature with books such as "Legend of Guatemala" (1930), his first book, the which marked "a milestone" not only in Central American literature, but in the Spanish language.

Asturias was also the first writer on the continent to make a novel about a tyrant write "Mr. President" (1946), based on the dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera, who governed Guatemala for more than 20 years from the end of the nineteenth century until 1920.

The book formed a tradition of the "novel of the dictator", that was followed by works like "The resource of the method", of Alejo Carpentier; books.

Ramírez lamented that Latin America does not celebrate the 50th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize to the Guatemalan "with greater majesty" and how his work "deserves it", as it has been the only one the occasion in which a Central American writer has obtained this recognition.

He said that especially the countries of Central America would have to celebrate this anniversary and make a greater tribute to "the transcendental work of Asturias" that put the literature of this region on the world stage.

"It is the first time that Central American literature reached this height in a moment that little was expected from a region that even today is still very marginal in terms not only social and economic but also cultural, "said Ramirez.

From 25 November to December 3 and with Madrid as the guest city of honor, FIL gathers more than 700 writers from 41 countries representing 20 languages in hundreds of activities that seek to convene 800,000 attendees.

In addition, 20,000 book professionals and 2,000 publishing houses will participate, which will display 400,000 titles from 47 countries in a space of 34,000 square meters.
