Dominican doctors are called to the seventh strike in less than two months

The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) today called a new strike of 48 hours for November 29 and 30, the seventh stoppage that will affect public hospitals in the country in less than two months, with the purpose of demanding from the Government the fulfillment of an agreement that provides for a salary increase.

Santo Domingo, Nov 27 (EFE) .- The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) today called a new strike of 48 hours for November 29 and 30, the seventh stoppage that will affect hospitals public of the country in less than two months, with the purpose of demanding from the Government the fulfillment of an agreement that provides for a salary increase.

The acting president of the entity, Waldo Ariel Suero, who will leave office in the coming days, insisted that the call for strike is due to the lack of response from the local public health minister, Altagracia Guzmán Marcelino.

"She has forced us to continue the fight" by not sitting down to talk, she said.

Suero added, "we have waited for weeks and months for the minister's call officials, but they have preferred to flee from the dialogue under the new pretext that they will only talk with the new elected officials of the CMD "because" they believe that it will be easier to deceive, but they will get tremendous surprise with Dr. Wilson Roa, "president-elect of the entity.

The Minister of Health said on several occasions that he would not maintain any dialogue under pressure neither before the celebration of the elections of the union, which were on November 8 last, but so far there has been no negotiation.

In November 2016, after almost seven months of negotiations and work stoppages, a salary increase of 25% was agreed for professionals in the sector and access to pensions for 1,800 people, among others improvements for health workers.

The agreement established that the salary increase would be carried out in two parts, one of 10%, which was applied as of January of this year, and another equivalent to 15%, scheduled for August.

However, the CMD ensures that more than 5,000 doctors, most of them workers from hospitals belonging to the Dominican Institute of Social Security (IDSS), were out of the second game of the increase, which is denied by the Ministry of Health.

On the other hand, Suero referred to the controversial announcement of the National Association of Private Clinics (Andeclip) that the services prior to surgical interventions should always be carried out in their affiliated centers.

In that sense, the leader union said that the measure announced goes against the fundamental principles such as equity, free choice and solidarity that, moreover, will make services for patients more expensive.
