The executive, who participated as a speaker on the second day of the IV International Congress of Tourism Quality, referred to the progress of Colombia in the sector of MICE tourism, Business, Conventions, Events and Incentives.

"We have identified that the tourism of meetings is a great boosting of the economy", added Díaz, adding that with every event that takes place "at least ten or eleven sectors of the economy are activated".

This sector represented more than half a million foreign visitors in 2016 They arrived in the country and the economic movement approached 674 million dollars.

In turn, he explained that there has been an increase in Colombian destinations that attract attention to the development of international events, among which are recently distinguished Cali, the three coffee regions, Neiva, Barranquilla and Ibagué, among others.

However, he explained that the MICE tourism has among its main challenges training operators in English, international certifications to be "up to par" in quality, training to meet the demand and identify the vocation of destinations.

For its part, the director of the Bureau of Bogotá, Sandra García, told Efe that the country has had a development in convention centers important such as Puerta de Oro in Barranquilla (north), the center of Valle del Pacífico in Cali (southwest), where the event takes place, and the Ágora in Bogotá.

On the second day of the congress also participated the secretary general of the Hotel Business Association of Madrid (AEHM), Mar de Miguel, who shared his experience to promote the Spanish city as a destination MICE.

In this sense, he affirmed that public-private collaboration has been taken into account, the increase of spaces to celebrate events, enrich the complementary offer of leisure and enhance the brands of the destination such as gastronomy, culture and nature, among others.

"The importance of capturing this type of tourism is by the profile of expenditure and instance", explained Mar de Miguel added that in this sector "the tourist spends much more than a leisure tourist, specifically seven times more, and three times more than a business tourist nationwide".
