Chilean leaders today criticized the inequality and gender gap that exists in the workplace and highlighted the need for a "cultural change" to leave behind machismo and promote a greater female participation in work.

Santiago de Chile, Nov 24 (EFE) .- Chilean leaders today criticized the inequality and gender gap that exists in the workplace and highlighted the need for a "cultural change" to leave behind machismo and encourage greater female participation in work.

"The day that labor participation between men and women is equal in Chile, it will be a cultural change so powerful for our society that we are going to be a developed and completely different country, "said the executive Katia Trusich, who was also undersecretary of Economy in the Government of Michelle Bachelet.

Trusich was one of the panelists of the second edition of the Women's Leadership Summit, organized by the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce of Chile, which had as a special guest to the Spanish designer Purificación García.

According to Trusich, who is currently Public Affairs Manager of the General Electricity Company (CGE), controlled by Gas Natural Fenosa, Chilean society exclusively attributes to women functions such as caring for sick family members or raising children.

"These functions are exercised by the woman and quite alone, "said the executive, who said she was hopeful for the change that generations of younger men can bring.

" I think that with the 'millennials' there is a change of paradigm, they want to be more part of family life and to be more present in the care of their children, "he said.

Chile has one of the highest rates of female labor participation in Latin America. worrying that the country, which is one of the most developed economies in the region, still has this gap in labor participation, and assured that it is largely a "gap" cultural ".

For her part, Alejandra Sepúlveda, executive director of Comunidad Mujer, an organization that works on the elaboration of public policies with greater gender equality, The wage gap between men and women was criticized.

He stressed that in the latest edition of the Global Gender Gap Ranking produced by the World Economic Forum, Chile occupies the site 127 of 144 countries when evaluating the equal salary for similar works.

"Chile is a very macho country and there are some things in the law that make this not move faster," he said. Sepúlveda, who gave as an example the Labor Code, in force in the country since 1930.

That legislation, which at the time was very progressive because it established, among other things, the postnatal leave, has not evolved the same pace as society and today is a "straitjacket", said the head of Community Woman.
