Brazil and the EU discuss opportunities to promote "green business"

The Brazilian government and the European Union (EU) started today a forum in Sao Paulo to analyze, together with the private sector, the possibilities of promoting "green businesses" in the country and identify the socio-economic changes needed to comply with the Paris Agreement.

Sao Paulo, Nov. 27 (EFE) .- The Brazilian government and the European Union (EU) began today a forum in Sao Paulo to analyze, together with the private sector, the possibilities of promoting "business "in the country and identify the socio-economic changes necessary to comply with the Paris Agreement.

" We are studying not only the concrete business possibilities with the objective of seeking funding for green businesses, but we are also to see what are the difficulties and opportunities for the transformation of our economies, "he said in the EU Ambassador to Brazil, Joao Gomes, at the opening.

The event, which will last until Wednesday, brings together Brazilian and European businessmen, as well as representatives of financial institutions and the public sector, who stressed the importance of connecting investors with sustainable business entrepreneurs with the environment.

Yvon Slingenberg, member of the EU's Directorate General for Climate Action, stressed that in order to reduce greenhouse gases and change economies, "innovative technology" will be necessary and "cooperation platforms", as well as "regulations and norms focused on green businesses".

Slingenberg recalled that twenty countries are responsible for 80% of emissions, among they Brazil.

"Brazil is the seventh largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, but on the other hand it has enormous potential to explore low carbon technologies and generate new jobs fostering a green economy, "André Nahur, coordinator of Climate Change and Energy of the WWF organization in Brazil, told Efe.

For Nahur, the first transformation What Brazil needs is to change the perception that changes to implement a "green" economy are "a cost to society" and encourage the idea that they are an opportunity to "increase the jobs. "

He also advocated strengthening initiatives within the private and civil sectors and from the Government, which has" good commitments "with respect to the Paris Agreement, but they need to "get out of paper and be incorporated into practice."

"Brazil is on the right track, but it needs to accelerate the pace because if it is not going to lose the right moment of the business opportunities, "stressed Nahur.

The Sao Paulo Forum includes round tables with investors and entrepreneurs dealing with low carbon agriculture, forest restoration, energy efficiency, bioenergy and solar energy generation.

"We must connect large investors with initiatives that are already underway," added the representative of WWF, who He described as "very worrying" the fact that global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) grew by 2% in 2017, according to the scientists' forecast.

The Paris Agreement on Climate Change, signed in 2015 by practically the entire International Community, aims to prevent global warming from exceeding two degrees Celsius by the end of this century with respect to the pre-industrial levels.
